Helldivers Moves to June 2028 With Alan Ritchson Confirmed by Sony
Sony settled the date and the star for Helldivers, but not what Ritchson plays, why Momoa left or why the film slipped 212 days from its November 2027 slot.
Sony Pictures has confirmed Alan Ritchson for Helldivers and moved the release from November 10, 2027 to June 9, 2028, without detailing his role or the reason for the new date.
One of the Helldivers, Role Undefined
Sony's announcement describes Ritchson as one of the Helldivers, the soldiers of an elite unit who fight alien creatures to stop the destruction of the fictional planet Super Earth. It does not use the word lead, although part of the press already calls him the film's star.
Ritchson is the first performer announced for the adaptation of Arrowhead Game Studios' game; the rest of the cast has not been announced. Justin Lin remains director from a script by Gary Dauberman and produces with Hutch Parker, PlayStation Productions' Asad Qizilbash and his own Perfect Storm Entertainment. Lin directed four Fast & Furious films and Star Trek Beyond; Ritchson appeared in Fast X.
Momoa Left in June Without an Official Explanation
Jason Momoa left the project in June, and neither Sony nor the actor explained the exit at the time. The Hollywood Reporter later attributed it to creative differences.
Talks with Ritchson surfaced in mid-September, with no comment from Sony and the film still on its original date. The official announcement came about two weeks later.
Treasure Island Took the 2027 Slot
The delay adds up to 212 days. The 2027 slot went to Ridley Scott's Treasure Island, and Sony updated other dates on its calendar at the same time. The new date falls in June, at the start of the American summer movie season.
The facts point to the calendar as part of the answer, not only the casting change, because another film took Helldivers' place. That is an inference: none of the coverage reviewed records Sony linking the two.
Two numbers frame the project. Helldivers 2 had passed 19 million copies sold across all platforms by October 2025, according to Variety, which also puts the worldwide box office of Uncharted, Sony's earlier collaboration with PlayStation Productions, at $407 million.
Confirmed: Alan Ritchson aboard, Justin Lin directing and June 9, 2028 as the release date. Still open: Ritchson's role, the rest of the cast, what led to the delay and why Momoa left in June.
